How to establish thought leadership with the new Flipboard 2.0

How to establish your personal brand using Flipboard 2.0

Recently,  Flipboard introduced what they call ‘the next generation of Flipbpard“, or in other words – Flipboard 2.0.

If you’re not yet familiar with the app, here is a short description of it from Wikipedia:

“It [Flipboard] collects the content of social media and other websites and presents it in magazine format and allows users to “flip” through their social-networking feeds and feeds from websites that have partnered with the company.”

I love Flipboard. Aside from iBook and the Kindle app, it’s my favorite way to read on the iPad. I’ve been using it since I bought my first iPad in 2010 and never looked back. It’s been my morning paper ever since. If you’ve never tried it, give it a try on your iPad, iPhone, Android based tablet, or smartphone.

It’s about creating great magazines

In today’s announcement, Flipboard introduced some very important and exciting new features that can benefit personal brands. The most important take-away from the 2.0 update, is that from now on, you can curate content, create your own magazine, and comment on articles.

So, as I said, Flipboard unveiled some pretty cool new features that will definitely upgrade you experience as a reader, but can also be harnessed to establish your personal brand.

6 things you can do to build your personal brand using Flipboard:

1. Create magazines around your subject of expertise

Flipboard 2.0 introduces the “create a magazine” feature. Creating a magazine is easy. When clicking the “+” button on an article, you can create a new magazine or add an item to an existing magazine.

By creating a magazine and curating content around your subject of expertise you can establish thought leadership. Collect great articles that will interest your potential clients or colleagues. If you’re running a blog, you can always throw your latest blog post in the mix by using Flipboard’s bookmarklet.

2. Choose the right category

When creating a new magazine, you can choose a category for it. With Flipboard’s new search capabilities, establishing the best category for your new magazine is super important. It’s a great way to get discovered by Flipbaord users who are interested in what you specialize in.

3. The right Magazine name

When creating a magazine you can choose its name. Don’t use a generic “My Magazine” title, instead use your brands name with a tag-line or simply use appropriate keywords such as “Roy Povarchik’s Social Media Marketing Magazine”. Use your magazine’s name to get more readers and potential clients, the same way you do with your blog.

4. The right cover photo

Nothing says “read me!” more than a good cover photo. One of the options in the new magazine feature is to select your magazine’s cover photo from the articles you’ve. Flipboard is all about visual appeal. Use the right photo to attract more readers.

5. Fill in the description

Don’t be lazy. If you’re opening a new magazine, don’t skip the description part. It says “optional” but we both know there’s no other option but to write a convincing description for your new magazine so readers will know immediately if it interests them or not. Tell them what they’ll be getting without them having to look for themselves.

6.  it public

Creating a magazine isn’t very helpful if nobody sees it, right? Make sure you hit the ‘Public’ button when creating a new magazine. It seems like a no-brainer but trust me, some people miss this part. Don’t be one of them.

Don’t forget that, as with all platforms, it’s all about giving real value and being present. Flipboard is no different. You’ll have to gather only great content, share, and comment on other contributor’s content. You know the drill.
